Does anyone know if Type 1 diabetes is hereditary?

My partner has Type 1 diabetes (the insulin dependent -non lifestyle dependent sort) and we are planning on having a child. Is this hereditary and is there anything that can be done to stop or lower the chances of it being ped down?
