I think you handled it very well...you called no attention to someone who craves attention of any kind. They left without hurt feelings, they left...and if you are truely polite, they will NOT be asked back. But I am sure they are used to not being invited back to many homes...other homes might well welcome them with open arms, but yours is not one of them. Congratulations for handing an ugly bare situation well.
